What is Enter-Great English?

Enter-Great English is an intervention programme that functions as a bridging tool, to ensure a smooth transition from the junior primary phase to the senior primary phase. The programme integrates and revises the various reading, spelling, comprehension and language skills that are required to achieve excellence in mastering the English language at this particular stage of development.

The Perfect Bridging Tool

Who would use Enter-Great English? This integrated intervention programme may be implemented in various ways:

1. English first-language Grade 3 curriculum.
2. An intervention programme for senior primary pupils.
3. English as a second-language or immigrant English programme.
4. Junior primary extension programme for the linguistically inclined.

About the Author

Hi and welcome to my passion project!

I am Kim Masson. I have been teaching primary school children for over 16 years. I started my career in the junior phase of primary school, where the ability to read with comprehension is a daily priority. Reading, spelling and comprehension are such interdependent skills, that it is surprising to me that any teacher would teach them in isolation. Hence, Enter-Great (Integrate) English.

I studied a four-year professional teaching degree through the University of Pretoria, South Africa, followed by an advanced certificate in learning difficulties. I worked at a government school for six years and from there moved into the private sector. Regardless of the private or public schooling sector, parents have continually asked the resounding question: “Do you not have some sort of extra English practise or activity that I could use at home to help my child with their reading, spelling and comprehension skills?” It is this very question that has inspired me to set about writing an integrated English programme, specifically for children aged 8-11 (Grades 3-5).

The surprising twist in my tale is that I presently manage a Maths institute at a private school in Pretoria. Now why would a Maths teacher spend her spare time writing a book focused on improving basic English skills? Well, the connection is not so surprising, as the ability to read with fluency and comprehension is a key factor to success in Mathematics. Consequently, my future goals are to contribute towards improving the levels of basic literacy and numeracy in young children.
